Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has thrown his full support behind Fawzia Yusuf Adam's bid to become chair of the African Union (AU).

The distinguished stateswoman, having previously served as both deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Somalia, also has the endorsement of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, setting the stage for her anticipated run in the 2025 AU election.

In a statement, the PM said "as part of the government's strategy to promote Somalia's influence in the international arena, we need to support one of our own to chair the AU".

Somalia has never held a prominent role within the AU despite being a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. This makes Fawzia's candidacy a bold step towards changing the narrative for Somalia within the AU, and providing a strong voice for the continent on the international arena.

Fawzia is a strong candidate, given her background in international affairs. She is seeking to break new ground,  not only representing Somalia but also championing gender equality within the AU.

With her sights set on leading the AU, Fawzia is determined to navigate the challenging landscape of global politics. Her visionary leadership aims to bring Africa to the forefront of world decision-making bodies, contributing substantially to shaping the future of the African continent.
